Lagos, Nigeria – The International Human Rights Advocacy and Awareness Centre (IHRAAC) has issued an urgent call for the respect of human rights and the rule of law in light of recent protests across Nigeria. Reports from the first day of the protests highlight significant casualties and widespread unrest.

According to IHRAAC, the protests have resulted in a tragic death toll of 21 individuals and injuries to 175 others. Over 1,154 individuals have been arrested, raising concerns about potential violations of due process and the right to liberty. Several states, including Yobe, Maiduguri, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna, have imposed curfews, impacting the freedom of movement of citizens.

Numerous states, such as Abuja, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Lagos, Osun, Niger, Rivers, Zamfara, Borno, and Yobe, have reported incidents of violence. Conversely, peaceful protests have been noted in states including Plateau, Taraba, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Benue, Nasarawa, Abia, and Ogun.

The economic impact of the unrest is significant, with an estimated loss of goods worth 6 billion Naira.

IHRAAC underscores the importance of upholding international human rights standards and the rule of law during this critical period. They urge all parties involved, including protesters, law enforcement agencies, and government authorities, to adhere to the following recommendations:

1. Respect Human Rights: Safeguard the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and peaceful protest as guaranteed under international human rights instruments and Nigerian law.
2. Exercise Restraint: Exercise maximum restraint in dealing with protesters and refrain from excessive use of force or arbitrary arrests.
3. Dialogue and Mediation: Prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement between government representatives, civil society, and protest organizers to address grievances and seek peaceful resolutions.
4. Transparency and Accountability: Ensure transparency in all actions taken, particularly in investigations into reported incidents of violence and human rights abuses. Hold accountable those responsible for unlawful actions.
5. Humanitarian Support: Provide immediate humanitarian assistance to those affected by the unrest, including medical care for the injured and support for displaced persons.

IHRAAC remains committed to monitoring the situation closely and urges all parties to prioritize human rights, peace, and the well-being of all Nigerians. They stand ready to offer support and collaborate with stakeholders toward sustainable solutions and justice.
